The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) have set out preventative measures to safeguard athletes from the islands from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with Newsday yesterday, TTOC President Brian Lewis mentioned "appropriate and necessary" initiatives that will be in place for the next 30 days after the first person tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

All TTOC meetings in this period have been cancelled as well as related travel for business within the Olympic Committee being cancelled.

Funding requests will be suspended for athletes who are set to travel abroad for Olympic-related qualifiers and extra sanitation measures have also been taken by TTOC.

Lewis said he has been following guidelines by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and although he remains positive about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics going ahead, he also understands the IOC approach.

"IOC is guided by medical experts and the Olympic Games is three months down the road, one can appreciate why at this point IOC would be operating within those specific parameters - the real challenge is within the next 30 days to six weeks.

"The steps we have put in place as a short-term measure to protect staff are appropriate and necessary."

More than 156,000 people have been infected by the disease with 5,821 dying, while the outbreak has also decimated the sporting calendar, with most scheduled events currently cancelled or postponed.
