2014 Junior Olympic silver and bronze medallist Dylan Carter withdrew from the final of the Men’s 100 metres backstroke Wednesday night to rest up for the 100m freestyle today at the Canadian Olympic and Paralympics trials at the Pan American Aquatic Centre in Toronto, Canada.

According to Carter’s local handler and coach Franz Huggins, Carter used the 100m backstroke preliminaries to blow out the cobwebs and get ready for the 100m free today where the 20-year-old is focusing on attaining the Rio Olympics A standard of 48.99 seconds. Carter’s current best is his 49.10 sixth place finish at last year’s Pan American Games, also in Toronto.

“Dylan virtually practised no backstroke in the lead-up to this competition and was just using this to calm the nerves and get ready for the 100 and 50 (freestyle) Friday (today) and Sunday,” said Huggins, who added that the other T&T swimmer in the 100m free, is Joshua Romany.

Carter broke George Bovell’s national record in the preliminaries of the 100 back Wednesday when he sprinted two laps in 54.94 to better the old mark of 55.22.
