The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago has invited Dr. Barry Fudge to Trinidad to perform the first stage of accreditation of the Elite Development & Performance Unit (EDPU) Physiology Laboratory and conduct a coach education talk shop on performance physiology testing.

Fudge is the Head of Endurance at British Athletics and also a Director at the UK-based high performance sports consultancy firm Lap 25, and his presence in Trinidad spearheads an effort to further professionalise the operations at the EDPU.

The first activity, the accreditation of the EDPU's sport science professionals, will be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday from 10 a.m. A series of assessments (physiological tests) will be conducted on an athlete. He or she will undergo maximal assessment and physiological profiling (lactate threshold assessment) for approximately 15-20 minutes in order to determine maximal oxygen uptake or the maximum rate at which oxygen is used by the body to produce energy.

This activity is also an opportunity to educate athlete and coaches about the range of sport science and medicine services offered at no cost to elite and national athletes by the EDPU.

The following day, the activity shifts to the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva where Fudge will facilitate a dialogue with specially invited coaches who will be exposed to his vast experience in the development and performance of elite athletics, with specific focus on endurance sport and physiological testing. This activity is carded to begin at 8.00 a.m.

The EDPU's Manager of Support Services Candice Thomas will also present on the benefits of performance physiological testing and the specifics of the EDPU's physiology laboratory.
